ALFALFA LEAF Medicago sativa -C/S - Rich in minerals and nutrients, including calcium, magnesium, potassium & beta carotene. A good laxative & natural diuretic. Folk remedy for arthritis & reputed to be excellent appetite stimulant & overall tonic. May reduce swelling & inflammation of rheumatism. CAUTION: avoid if subject to lupus or if you are taking medication to prevent formation of blood clots. Mix 1 tablespoon with 8 ounces of warm water. Drink 1 cup home brewed tea daily.

ALLSPICE (JAMAICAN) POWDER or (JAMAICAN) WHOLE Tropical herb/spice with complex aroma; useful for indigestion; potent anti-fungal properties. Excellent addition to many foods. Add to potpourri or pomanders as fixative and scent.

ANGELICA ROOT Angelica archangelica C/S According to legend, a French monk in the 10th century was inspired by the Archangel Raphael to cure a plague with Angelica. Angelica root is good for indigestion, mild stomach cramps & lack of appetite. Might relieve build up of phlegm due to asthma & bronchitis. Antispasmodic to relieve menstrual cramps. Can be good for people who get cold easily. It is also reputed to boost your energy, increase your well-being and perk up your romantic passion. Chinese herbalists also recommend Angelica  as one of the best herbs to treat menopause symptoms such as hot flashes, dry skin, memory loss, mood swings and irritability. 

Suggested daily dose: 2 to 3 teaspoons per cup of boiling water; steep for 10 minutes. & strain. Or 1 teaspoon per cup, taken 3 times per day. Do not expect immediate results; use for at least a month; if after 4 months you see no improvement, consider using Black Cohosh or Chasteberry. Externally: may be applied to reduce discomfort of rheumatism or as remedy for skin lice. Magick: used for centuries in witches’ brews for protection & exorcism. Carry the root with you as an amulet.  Caution: can cause sun sensitivity; do not use with blood thinners or if you are pregnant or undergoing cancer treatment.

ANISE (STAR)  STANDARD Often chewed in small quantities after a meal to promote digestion & sweeten the breath. Adds a unique taste to sweet dishes; use as a mulling spice by itself or with other spices to flavor cider, wine, tea or coffee.

ANISE SEED  WHOLE ~In the medicine cabinet, a tea brewed of the crushed seed can relieve digestive disorders & cramps, help expel gas, loosen phlegm & prove useful against coughs & colds. Might soothe colicky infants. Used since the Middle Ages to increase milk production in nursing mothers. Crush seeds into powder; use 1 teaspoon to 1 cup boiling water. Drink up to 3 times daily. Magickally: Carry Anise seed for protection or purification. Add a handful of Anise to bath for good, general cleansing. A pillow of Anise is said to keep away nightmares.

ARROWROOTMaranta arundinacea POWDER Useful in the kitchen to thicken gravies or stews. In cosmetics, helps  moisturizers to penetrate the skin. Excellent base for dusting powders. To alleviate foot fungus, put inside socks or shoes a bit of Arrowroot mixed with ground Lavender flowers and Pau d’Arco.

BASIL (SWEET) - C/S - Some say that by carrying Basil in your pocket you will always attract money. The French call it herb royale. The Italians see it as a sign of love. In the kitchen, fresh Basil, with its rich, spicy, mildly peppery flavor with a trace of mint & clove is an excellent addition to any vegetable dish and the favorite herb for Pesto. Dried basil is wonderfully aromatic, whether in cooking or potpourri. Medicinally: try a teaspoon of dried basil in cup of hot water for an after dinner digestive aid; might relieve stomach cramps, nausea & gas. Add to bath water for invigorating aromatic; add to hair rinse for luster. Magick Powers: Purification, Protection, Exorcism, Love ; Can be added to exorcism & protection incenses. An ingredient of Purification Bath Sachet. Often used in wealth & prosperity rituals. Add to love sachets & rituals.

BAY LEAVES Laurus nobilis Symbol of glory & reward, the leaves have been woven into wreaths of victory on the battlefield or for scholarship.  Long believed to keep one safe from thunder & lightning, it has also been proclaimed that standing near a bay tree could also bring protection from witches or the devil. Culinary uses include a leaf in almost any soup, stew or sauce, added to the water when cooking beans, lentils or rice. A bay leaf in your pantry jars will help prevent moths. Added to potpourri, bay is an excellent moth protection. Medicinally: it can aid digestion. Magick Uses: Protection, Clairvoyance, Exorcism, Purification and Healing. Burn the leaves to induce visions. Wear as an amulet to ward off negativity and evil. Burn and scatter on the floor in exorcism and purification rituals. Put leaves under the pillow to induce inspiration and prophetic dreams. Add to purification incenses and baths. Use in healing in healing incenses & sachets.
